Fall 2013, Math 647, An Introduction to PDE
Course Information
 Course Coverage: This course intends to cover some basic topics of partial differential equations:
the introduction of the wave equation, the diffusion equation, and the Laplace equation in the one, two and
three dimensional spaces. We will discuss the techniques to solve these equations on different domains
under various boundary conditions, especially the method of separation of variables via the Fourier series.
We tentatively plan to cover the following chapters and sections: Sec. 1.11.4 in Chapter 1,
Sec. 2.12.4 in Chapter 2, Sec. 3.13.4 in Chapter 3, Sec. 4.14.3 in Chapter 4, Sec. 5.15.4 in Chapter 5
and Sec. 6.16.3 in Chapter 6.

Grade Policy
 Homework: There will be 10 homework. Each homework consists of roughly 15 problems; only 3 of them will be graded, which will be
decided after you turn in homework. The lowest homework grade will be dropped.
 Quizzes: There will be 5 quizzes in class; the date will be annouced one week in advance in class or by email.
 Midterm: There will one midterm of 50 minutes in class. The date is TBA.
 Final Exam: There is a comprehensive final exam in class. The times is 7:30 AM  10 AM on 12/19/2013.
 Grade Percentage: homework (30 %) + midterm (20 %) + quizzes (10 %) + final (40 %).
